  1. You can get a family attorney and go to court and have the parent sign a paper giving you temp custody or guardianship of the minor child.  It isn't fostering because you don't go through the county but it is still you taking care of someone elses child on a possible temporary basis.  By doing it this way that means the parent(s) don't have to be listed with CPS and go through all of that and the child gets to stay out of the foster care system. Good luck.

  2. Your best bet is to become a guardian.  In my state, a judge actually has to approve this, even if it is privately done (i.e. outside of CPS).  A lawyer can draw up the papers, parents and you go to court and it's done.  The parents can rescind the guardianship at any time.

Going through CPS is another option and does not always go the way you would like it.  Unless you are an immediate family member, a homestudy likely has to be done before you can go forward, although a judge can grant you emergency guardianship.

  3. If the child is in foster care right now, you will have to follow the guidlines to become a foster/adoptive parent within your state. You need to talk to the childs social worker and see about getting the process started immediatly, especialy if the child will be available for adoption soon. Most caseworkers want to place the children with a family member so that is an advantage to you.

  4. why not adopt this child

  5. Contact your local authorities. Explain the situation. The authorities will probably do a background check on you. You have basically done all the leg work for them. IF your background check works out, shouldn't take too long for you to be eligible for the child to live with you.

  6. This allows for the child to remain around family and friends instead of being placed into the states welfare. It is actually better for the child. Any child has a GAL (Guardian at lite). Let the Gal know and petition the court. The child will have fewer restrictions on seeing their family.

  7. If the birthparents are handing the child over to children's services, all they need to do is tell them that they want the child to go to you.

This, of course, only works if you are certified as a foster parent.  Another option is to have them sign over guardianship to you, and then get certified to foster or adopt while you have guardianship.

  8. You can only be a foster parent if the child is in the court system, and has been removed from the custody of the parents(this may be permanent or temporary). If the parents want to give you custody, you would need to contact a lawyer who practices family law and have the parents give you legal guardianship. If you feel a child should be removed from their home because of abuse or neglect, you need to contact the child protective services in your county.
