I can only tell you what my experience has been here in NY.  Most meetings are just for alcoholics (unless it is an open meeting then anyone can attend.) and there are a bunch of different types of meetings however generally speaking.... When you get to an AA meeting someone will probably welcome you and show you where you can grab a cup of coffee or tea maybe some cookies.  The size of the meetings varies.  You will then grab a seat, you can sit anywhere you want (I prefer to sit up front so I can hear better).  Someone will then open the meeting, maybe have a few AA readings and then someone will share their story.  After they share most times the meeting will be opened up for people to share.  You absolutely do not have to say anything, if you just want to listen,  you can.  Most meetings last around an hour or an hour and 15 minutes.  After that make sure you pick up a meeting book, which is a list of meetings in the area and thats it.
