  1. Do you mean why do you have to step on the brake when shifting out of Park and into Drive or Reverse?

    So you don't go flying through your garage door and into the street, which is exactly what will happen if your foot is not on the brakes when you put the car in gear.  

    It's not rocket science


  2. Most modern cars require you to engage the foot break when engaging the transmission simply to ensure the operator is under control of the vehicle. It's a safety really. Older vehicles didn't necessarily require this.

  3. A lot of newer cars are set up to the only way to get the car in gear is to press on the brake pedal.  It is a safety feature that won't let the car jump into gears.

  4. Because people are stupid and will start a car and put it in drive or reverse without their foot on the brake then hit the garage or another car and sue the car company.
