  1. To evaluate the extra players on the team to see who gets cut and who doesn't. (Or to injure all the good players before the season starts!)

  2. To see who makes the 53 man roster. Each team has to cut around 30 players. It's better to see who sucks before you lose a real game.

  3. To get players back in the rhythm

Especially important with us kickers and punters. we need reps and reps and reps to get into rhythm for the season. Or else we shank punts. Chip kickoffs. and kick field goals too fat. (line drive).

Its just to get practice in a game setting.

Also to see what rookies, backups, and free agents can do to improve your team.

(Example, Durant Brooks beating out Derrick Frost in Washington)

(Rex getting benched in favor of Kyle Orton in Chicago)

  4. Lol, the answers about injuring players before the season starts are funny, it sure feels that way sometimes.

Pre-season is basically a chance for the coaches to evaluate new players and see how players work together. The team has to cut their roster significantly and the coaches need to see the players in action before making a decision.

It is also a chance for veteran players to learn their new team.  In example, this pre-season Brett Favre is learning the Jets offense and getting a chance to learn the plays in a game situation before the games actually count for someting.

Football is a rough game and the games seem unnecessary, but they really do serve a purpose.

  5. just to get warmed up. practice is just self training. pre season games are exactly like wd-40. make the rust go away

  6. The purpose of pre season football is for the coaches to see the young players play and what kind of talent they have

  7. money...

you can only play 16 season games...even though they do not sell out the preseason games, they do sell some tickets, money they would not earn without a preseason

  8. the players get into the flow of playing again...evaluate young players and players trying to make the team..settle all of the roster spots,,,these are the purposes

  9. there are a few purposes

    1. to get the players warmed up

    2. to let their rookies and bench players an opportunity to fight for a position job

    3. to have something to watch while the regular season starts

  10. To see how many of your star players you can injure...so that when the regular season rolls around, your seasons over before it began! :P
