  2. A heart stent is part of a procedure referred to as a balloon angioplasty.  The procedure involves the placement of a coronary balloon with a stent (a metal meshed tube) mounted on top into a vessel that has a partial or complete blockage. The balloon is inflated pushing the plaque in the vessel to the side.  The procedure is much less invasive than an open heart surgery and typically the patient can be in and out of the hospital in less than 24 hours.    New techniques can allow a patient to have all of this done through the a radial artery (wrist) access.  The patients can go home in under 4 hours with significantly improved coronary vasculature.
