What is the purpose of a UHF repeater at airports.

I live in york and my local airport is Leeds bradford (LBIA) Because im 25 miles from the airport getting atc from the airport is very slim but i can get leeds tower on 455.6125nfm Perfect but on 123.0am i get nothing why is this ?what is the benefit for the airport to use this repeater thanks

  1. Repeaters allow for the signal to be re transmitted over obstructions such as hills or buildings( basically when the line of sight is inturepted). Maybe there are surronding mountains between you and the airport?
