  1. It's a profit making non-profit that sells insurance and always has been. Once it's name was America Association of Retired Persons but now AARP doesn't mean anything at all.  It was formed by an insurance salesman and that's what they do.  It's a 501(c)(4) which means they don't have to pay taxes and they keep all the profits inside the corporation.  Mostly, it screwed older people out of their money, selling crappy insurance and lobbying to be allowed to sell more crappy insurance. They were a prime mover in creating the famous "donnut hole" in the prescription coverage Medicare program.  They get over a billion dollars a year.
