  1. caterpillars have no reproductive organs.

    some butterflies don't eat.

    why waste energy on stuff you're not using?

    in addition, caterpillars aren't very good at migration.

    butterflies are far better.

  2. They can fly then. Some travel thousands of miles and that's pretty tough to do on foot...even if you have a bunch of 'em.

  3. So they can fly away and breed and lay eggs that become other caterpillars.
