Question:

What is the purpose of continually using one's Brights while driving in Metropolitan Areas?

I am continually being blinded by people who drive with their brights on all the time in metro areas and now there seem to be more and more drivers doing this.

Is there some cultural significance to this practice? Some, "macho racer dude" mentality that is driving it?

I'm quite curious about it and would love an answer from someone in the street racing subculture or other urban subculture that encourages this practice.

My thanks in advance.

  1. Most everyone who has answered has some good input as to why this happens.

We live in a culture of "self-importance" and as a result we don't have as much respect and consideration for others anywhere, anytime as previous generations had. It could indeed be a "street culture" thing. It is however, illegal to use high beams within certain distances when following behind or approaching oncoming vehicles.

I suppose one takes a risk of getting a fine whenever one decides to do it.

Im not in the street racing subculture but I am in a way.....lol

Im a driver and a Driving Instructor...

  2. Where i live it would be called" looking for a ticket "

    That's illegal here....

  3. STUPIDITY

  4. Incompetence, stupidity and the true understanding of the rules of the road.........

  5. The biggest  reasons for this conduct would be ignorance of the law and inconsideration.        Another problem of the same sort would be misadjusted headlamps or fog/road lamps that shine up into the eyes of other drivers.

  6. I'm not in the street racing culture but I agree with you. There is no need for that and all these people are doing is creating an extreme hazard for everybody including themselves. What if they blinded someone and they swerved directly into their path? I have good night vision so I don't even use high beams on dark country roads. Another thing that is very irritating is those "barely legal" super bright low beams (in my opinion, not legal at all)

  7. It is possible under daylight conditions that you cannot see the blue high beam indicator light. this light years ago was red and very easy to see. also it could be just stupidity but I doubt it is some sort of cult thing.
