What is the purpose of edging when building a patio?

I am trying to build a flagstone patio (dry) and was wondering if I really needed to edge.

if your just laying them on sand it is advisable to lay an edging to prevent the sand being washed away causing the slabs to sink. hope this helps.

The purpose of the edging is to have a sound perimeter to hold your stones in place.The pavers/stones tend to move as they get wet/freeze-thaw cycles and general use.

Another nice thing is you can get creative in your design and see the end result before placing stones.
