Yes, I know that most of them are a good source of food. But what about on an evolutionary basis?
They just sit there and do nothing, while we pick them with ease and eat them. They have no real "sentience" or self-purpose. They grow and then expire, unless someone eats them.
Let's say we give them millions of years to "evolve" in a stable environment. Could they ever become "sentient"? Or be able to move at their own will and reproduce, eat, sleep, etc?
Or will they just continue to be motionless and do nothing for the rest of the earth's existence should it continue to give them a comfortable environment?
