What is the purpose of kneecaps?

The obviously aren't necessary b/c baby's are born without them. I just assumed they are built in knee pads to protect the joint and baby's aren't born with them b/c of the birthing process. is this correct?

  1. They lock your legs and stop you from falling on your face!

They're also connected to the major tendons in your leg.

  2. well i think it would be extremely difficult to stand up without leening even a little bit forward on your kneecap, id think of it as riding a unicycle because you can slide back and forward and its hard either way

thats probably why it takes long time for babys to walk and little kids always are tumbling and falling down anyways

  3. I have heard the same thing you have, that babies don't develop

knee-caps until they are about four. I have received this information by

e-mail and found it very interesting. However as I thought about it I wondered the same thing. My guess would be that what they meant was the knee-caps were not fully developed. To solve your mystery completely I would just ask your doctor on your next check-up.

  4. they are apart of your bone structure and help you stand up and say in place
