  1. By asking for their 'purpose', you assume they were created WITH purpose. So I'll say that God made them to provide high holy places from which to worship Him, as places of refuge in time of flood, as barriers for creating weather patterns in their locality, and sculptural works of art to please the eye.

    How's that?

  2. To make valleys.....

  3. God put them there to slow down giants, who would otherwise go ripping across the countryside, ravaging town after town.

They get the pine trees stuck between their toes and eventually have to sit down to pick them out.  When they do that, God dumps a huge pile of dirt on them, and another mountain is made.

This cycle goes on forever.  When the giant inside dies and rots eventually, the mountain collapses inward and you get a volcano.  The giant's rotted guts, heated up by the pressure, sometimes come spouting out the top.  It's really cool!

  4. So you can run to the top of the mountain when the sea level rises from me running my air conditioner.

  5. They are a result of plate tectonics.

  6. Part of the water shed that is part of the water cycle.

  7. They occur when tectonic plates of the earth collide.  They have no "purpose".  They are just there.  They do function as natural barriers of jet streams though.
