They're probably not even thinking about it, they're just trying to get down the road so they're going as far forward as possible without thinking about safety at all.

Sometimes people are truly oblivious to the fact that they are tailgating (I have this problem according to my husband).

That's just it, they are dicks.  All we can do it grin and bear it in fear we dont get shot if we brake check their happy arshes!!  People are so rude, there just isn't a right answer to this question.  They really are just dicks, just like you said.

It's supposed to intimidate you to go faster. Doesn't faze me at all. Just adjust your rear view mirror so you don't see them.

To me, tailgating should be treated at least as seriously as assault. It is one of the most disgustingly negligent acts a citizen can do. It should certainly be treated as the worst traffic violation on the books. By tailgating, you are willfully creating an extremely dangerous situation for a prolonged period of time. Anyone who DOESN'T understand the hazard they present by doing it, does NOT belong holding a license to drive.

Most of the time they want you to go faster.

Sometimes on highways it is to conserve fuel. If you draft (tailgate) the other vehicle pulls you so you use less fuel.

im sorry, if that happens to you all the time, that drivers tailgate you.  many drivers tailgate because they are very impatient and want to drive faster, and/or the driver in front of them is driving too unreasonably slow.  i agree that tailgating is dangerous, stupid, and most of the time pointless, but that is the truth why many people choose to tailgate other drivers.  it is not necessarily to intimidate the driver in front of them, but more to signal the driver in front of them to move over and let them pass.

there is nothing much you can do about tailgators.  the only thing you can do is to move out of their way.  i dont recommend slowing down when the driver behind you is tailgating because you will just create more road rage problems.  the only ones who can really stop tailgators are the police officers, but they cant always take care of that problem, as they have more important things to do as well.

Tailgaters either want you to speed up, or move out of their way.

If you speed up, they continue to tailgate. It's dangerous.

I punish them by going slower.
