  1. These are fitted to tail lift platforms because when the lift is in use it extends the length of the vehicle and the rear reflectors or the long vehicle plate may be obscured. They are part of the 6monthly loller test on tail lifts and must be fitted.

  2. to keep pebbles or spray(when the road is wet) from hitting cars

  3. sometimes they conceal two channels where they store wood/alloy  ramps etc

  4. When the tailgate is down for loading or unloading, the flaps hang down as a warning.

  5. you mean the mud flaps?

  6. to display the rear of the vehicle when the tailgate is in the down position!

  7. What is wrong with people.  Read the question.  It mentions TAILGATE.  That is the moveable platform that moves up and down to help the driver unload/load his goods.  NOTHING TO DO WITH MUD FLAPS.

The 2 flaps he is talking about are  square bits of plastic that hang down when the TAILGATE ( remember that one) is in the down position.  What is happening now is that when it is down it increases the overall length of the vehicle, and as such it needs warning symbols to help oncoming motorists.

    Simple really....

    Mud flaps uh.....
