What is the purpose of the bands below Rafa Nadal's knees?

He suffers from tendinitis so it is a support.  Because his game is more aggressive than others the constant stop and start rage havoc on his knees.  He wears those to protect them from the sudden starts and stops friction and to protect him from getting hurt.

My hubby asked me that earlier on, my reply was to support them as they take alot of pounding.

His knees got taped last year after the final at wimbledon since then every tournament he`s got them taped !!!!

He has tendonitis in both knees, the strapping provides support for him :) Vamos Rafa !

Alot of sportsmen strap their knees in a similar fashion. When I worked with one of the pro football teams in England there was a player who always strapped his knees in that way. I asked him about it once and he said it was to keep his kneecap in place. I believe he had a syndrome of some sort where his kneecap would move slightly in and out of the grooves.

In Rafa's case I believe he has tendonitis in his knees. This is where the tendons become inflamed and pinch on the sheaths (surrounding area of the tendon), also when stretching the tendons causing alot of pain. Injections can help the syndrome but the extra strapping prevents it from getting to a point where he may need injections on a regular basis.

Other than that it may be part of his routine to strap them now.
