  1. Just in case someone is not paying attention and they start going off the road that would wake them up to reality that they need to pay attention...

  2. It isn't a lot of work.  There's a machine that does it while the asphalt is still soft.  They just roll this compacter down the line and the little gear-tooth like things on it do all the work.

And yes, all this work for sleepy drivers.  So that they don't kill not only themselves, but you.

  3. The grooves in the side of the highway that let you know when you go too close to the edge. Not just for sleepy but for those not paying attention. Very helpful at getting people back on track. Also, not fun to drive on. Keeps people off of the shoulder and on the road.

  4. Noise and vibration produced by shoulder rumble strips are effective alarms for drivers who are leaving the roadway. They are also helpful in areas where motorists battle rain, fog, snow, or dust. Rumble strips also help reduce highway hypnosis-a condition where white lines and yellow stripes on long, monotonous stretches of straight freeway can mesmerize and wreak havoc with a driver's concentration.

  5. Not just sleep drivers, but inattentive drivers too.

  6. They are designe to alert drivers when they are veering off the road, no matter what the cause...sleepy, talking on cell phone, tuning the radio.  We used to call them "drunk lines".  LIke when you're too drunk and shouldn't be driving, and can't keep your car on the road.  I once drove through a heavy snow storm just by driving on the rumble strips.  Traffic was slowed almost to a crawl and visibility was almost zero(at night too) so I just followed on top of the rumble strips.  No, I wasn't drunk either!

  7. to wake u up when your drifting out of your lane.

  8. Not just sleepy drivers, but drivers who aren't paying attention.  Without those sorts of precautions a lot more accidents would happen, so it's worth the cost.
