  1. The main purpose of the census is to determine the number of people living in each area, thereby dictating the number of representatives to the  US House and Senate.

Well, it helps redistrict for Congress voting, and adjusts the representation per state, so that small states dont wield too much influence in the House of Reps.  It helps allocate Welfare, Education, and Medicaid Dollars, as well asw many other forms of federal funding.  It helps states determine where to spend their money as well.  It does a lot from a governmental standpoint.

  4. Businesses pay attention to the census. The census helps with forecasting. The census is very important. It gives hard facts. There are so many reasons we need the census.

    One reason is to plan for resources. (schools, where people live, etc.)

  5. To gather statistics.  Urban planning (schools, hospitals, roads), health care liabilities (medicare/aid), immigration reform . . . any program that requires a population measure utilizes the census.  The census is used to gather statistical information which in turns allows our politicians to long term decisions based on potential use/disuse.
