  1. Like the others have said, the heart is a hard working muscle so it needs its own supply of blood(which includes nutrients, oxygen and removal of waste substances). Yeah, the heart needs its own blood vessels to maintain it. So the heart actually pumps blood even to itself .....but technically we kinda knew that happened already in blood circulation. Anyway, when these coronary vessels get blocked then a person goes into cardiac arrest aka a heartattack.


  2. To supply the heart muscle with oxygen and nutrients - it is an actively respiring tissue and needs a constant blood supply.

    It is vital that the heart gets a blood supply, therefore the coronary vessels come right off the main blood vessels just before/after they come into/out of the heart.
