  1. Leave aside their current role in the War On Terror for now.

Protecting the oceans, that is ensuring freedom of movement for trade on the high seas is a very important function.  Before the US, Great Britain provided this benefit to the world and before that people had to pay ransom to pirates like those punks on the Barbary Coast.  The ability for vessels of all nations to move freely reduces the barriers and the costs to trade, benefiting everyone in the world.

  2. its a cruise ship for the soldiers

    fun in the sun

you need to watch the military channel

    its great

  3. lol they dont protect oceans they do water attacks on people... water missiles to destroy other foreign country battleships, they do water assaults the navy seals use stealth by going underwater and then sneaking into the enemy territory its way more complicated than that

  4. They provide an outlet so our troops can go on cruises and take as many Liberties as they can!

  5. As others have said, they transport jets and helo's and all of their ammo in order to attack where they are needed.  They also show a US military presence (they have a name for this but I can not think of it right now).  Even when we are not at war, they still go on deployment in order to have that "presence" to other countries.

Also, there are a lot of Navy personnel in Iraq right now between the corpsman and all the IA's.

  6. The United States Navy projects the power of the United States Of America abroad and protects our interests and that of our allies wherever they may exist on the globe.

  7. There are Navy Ground units. See Bees are one. They build a repair things.

Fleet Hospitals are another. (The Navy's version of Mash)

Navy personnel augment and support other branches of the Military. Many of the modern military are joint forces operations. (Army-Marines or Army-Navy or Navy-Air Force...or any combinations) This cross or inter service training and deployments happen all the time. It is good for all branches to work together.

Don't forget about the Navy Air Commands. There are a lot of land-based air stations where they train and fly military aircraft.

And protecting U.S ports and waterways is a major undertaking. The seaways are forgotten about but there is still a lot of sea traffic. Many things you buy are imported on merchant ships. Someone has to protect the seaways so that the ships have a safe voyage. Protecting the seas is the Navy's primary mission but they do a lot more.

  8. How else do you imagine all those fighter planes get from Norfolk, Virginia to the Middle East?
