  1. to wage war upon our enemies at sea, on land and in the air.

  2. force projection...

much of the original use of a navy has gone away as force projection can be done with aircraft now, but there is other value to it as well.  70% of the world's surface is covered by water... who protects that?

but mostly, the navy, of all services, is defensive.  while minor force projection can be done with air services, it can only be done in large scale into a safe landing field.  the true heavy forces would have to come by sea, even today.  because we live on a relatively small continent with only other countries who are much weaker than us, any invasion to our mainland would have to come by sea.  a strong navy prevents that and protects from it.  it also allows, in case a force is landed on the NA continent for the attacking of supply lines as all supplies would have to come from another continent.

how important is that?  in WW2, if Germany and Italy had spent more time on a quality navy and less on 'buzz bombs' the war may have ended quite differently.  we would not have been able to get out millions of troops, tanks, guns, food to the Brits and 'fortress Europe' would have been reality instead of just a plan.

  3. They provide sea cruises for the Marines.. they show up in foreign ports and rattle their sabers and launch their planes for airshows.. and when there is nothing else to do... they go to war.

  4. Are you kidding????

  5. They are also there to give women something to swoon over in those very nice uniforms.  sigh......

  6. Any country must be guarded against the enemy.During the 1971 war when East- Pakistan  was surrounded ,it was  Indian Navy was involved in the war and we won them

  7. A navy is the branch of a country's military forces principally designated for naval warfare and amphibious warfare namely lake- or ocean-borne combat operations and related functions.

It includes operations conducted by surface ships, amphibious ships, submarines, and seaborne aviation, as well as ancillary support, communications, training, and other fields; recent developments have included space related operations.

The strategic offensive role of a Navy is projection of force into areas beyond a country's shores (for example, to protect sea-lanes, ferry troops, or attack other navies, ports, or shore installations).

The strategic defensive purpose of a Navy is to frustrate sea-borne projection-of-force by enemies.

The strategic task of the navy also may incorporate nuclear deterrence by use of nuclear missiles.
