What is the purpose of the new border fence with Mexico?

Is it to keep illegal immigrants out or will it be used in the near future to keep us in? I read that this has just been passed by congress but don't know when it will actually get built.

The purpose of the new border fence is so that politicians can pretend to be getting tough on illegal immigration while actually doing nothing effectual about it.

Thus they hope to get votes both from the anti and pro immigrant sides.  And I suppose the contract money will make a nice party favor for somebody as well.  

A tremendous bargain all around, no doubt.

One of the main reasons is to stop the illegal trafficking of drugs and people.   Many have died by being locked up in an un-airconditioned trailers after paying their life savings for a way into the U.S.  Additionally, since Mexico doesn't take care of its people, running drugs is quite profitable.  They can obtain drugs cheaply in Mexico and then sell them here for much more.

Yes, it is to keep illegal aliens out.   The steady influx of illegal aliens has driven down wages in the U.S., but because of poor enforcement, there are people living here illegally who have been here since they were babies.   Is it fair to deport them now when this is the only home they have known?  It is better to keep them out in the first place and force them to enter legally so these deep personal crises do not occur.

Political posturing and pretending to respond to the public.

The enormous "superfarm" corporations rely on that exploitable cheap labor for their profits and THEY donate generously to elections.

We have an enormous illegal immigration problem due to the greed of corporate America and the cooperation of congress.

If we had rational immigration limits more nearly matching our DEMAND for labor, then those immigrants would be TAXED, and their employers would have to pay SS and Workers Comp for them, they would qualify for minimum wage and have to compete against Americans on EQUAL terms...the jobs would dry up... and they would stop coming.
