  1. Fly line is very thick, the tippet gives a thin line to tie your bait.  Usually it is between 5 and 10 feet long.  Mine are usually 6'.  I use regular fishing line, you can spend more on the tippets if you want.

  2. its what you tie your fly to

if your asking these questions you need to back up and learn some more

  3. The tippet is a short piece of leader material tied to the end of the leader.  Typical leaders are tapered from 20 lb test to 6 lb or smaller. The tippet is about 6-12 inches long and it is tied to the leader and the fly. When the fly is changed, part of the tippet is lost, after 24 changes, the tippet is replaced with only a small loss of the expensive tapered leader.  At least that's how I've done for 50 years.

  4. ya the tippet just keeps the fish from seein the fly line

  5. I agree with Jim and Mad Mav on this one. I have used fluorocarbon up to 12' in length, but it is a bit much to handle at that length.

  6. to make  your lure(fly)  seem like its not  attached to any thing

  7. The simple answer is because you have a tapered leader connected to your fly line, you attach your fly to this, however by re-tying new flies to it it gets shorter and its not as easy to tie a fly to, and also there is more chance of a trout etc getting spooked by your fly line, so a tippet is attached you can use either a fluorocarbon tippet or a co-polymer tippet. Good quality tippet i use often
