  1. WWI was the first war in which both sides implemented the use of chemicals as a means of attacking one another. For this reason gas masks became standard issue for the armed forces, although sometimes that didn't matter as many chemical weapons can be absorbed through the skin. Machine guns were a novelty for the time period, they were the first portable rapid firing weapons that could take out several targets in a relative short amount of time. Bolt action rifles especially those with zoom scopes equipped were designed and built for accuracy, firing a single round before manual reload became necessary. As far as catapults, that's the first time I've ever heard of them being used in WWI, not sure about them.
