"la muralla" by Nicolás Guillén

The Wall

To build this wall,

Bring me all the hands,

The Blacks, their Black hands,

The Whites, their White hands.

a wall that will go

from the ocean to the mountain,

from the ocean to the mountain,

from the mountain to the ocean,

well there over the horizon.

-Tun, Tun!

-Who is it?

-A rose and a carnation...

-Open the wall!

-Tun, Tun!

-Who is it?

-The sword of the colonel...

-Close the wall!

-Tun, Tun!

-Who is it?

-The dove and the laurel...

-Open the wall!

-Tun, Tun!

-Who is it?

-The worm (scorpion), and the centipede...

-Close the wall!

To the heart of the Friend,

Open the wall;

To the poison and the knife,

Close the wall;

To the myrtle and the mint,

Open the wall;

To the snake's teeth,

Close the wall;

To the heart of the Friend,

To the nightingale on the flower,

Open the wall...

Let's build a wall,

Raising all of our hands;

The Blacks, their Black hands. The Whites, their White hands.

A wall that will go

  1. i think, that it mean to build a home for every black and white together and only let the one with the good heart or that are good go through and not the bad.

  2. to promote peace around the world

  3. To understand this poem, you need to understand the symbolism of the "wall"; What does a wall do?... it protects you from the outside, and it keeps you inside... The author (I believe) is trying to make the point of "tearing down" the wall between people (be it racial barriers as shown as the black and white hands, or any other indifferences). I believe he is also describing the use of walls as protection against anything that can harm a person mentally and physically.  The wall is symbolic, you can figure why...

  4. if everyone works together it will all work out

  5. let all things peaceful and in harmony into your soul--- let your heart close all things of bad, and   unpleasent feelings towards yourself, and all humanity out.

  6. if we all work together toward the positive shutting out the negative this would be a world that works good

  7. It promotes the creation of a peaceful nation where all races can live together without all the "crud" we have spewing everywhere today. It says "keep all the bad c**p out, and we'll pick the good things we want."

  8. this poem is to inspire peace between blacks and whites
