  1. Get the train from Crawley to London Victoria. From here you can get the tube to wherever you want to go in London.

It may be best getting a one day city travel ticket. This will enable you to hop on and off the tube at different locations.

  2. This is the transport for London website & to the right of the page is the journey planner.  If you know what your nearest train station is in Crawley & decide where you want to go.

The only station I could think of was Purley, because I knew somewhere who lived there so the journey I looked up goes from Purley to Oxford Circus, depending on the route you take it should take between 40 - 50 mins by train:

  3. Gatwick Express - takes you straight to Victoria in 30mins and then you can get the tube to anywhere.

  4. If you are landing at Gatwick airport, then take the Gatwick express to  Victoria. London doesn't really have a downtown. Its referred to as The City or The West-End.
