What is the quickest way to upload large numbers of photos?

I regularly have to upload large numbers of high quality photos. Normally i send off a dvd as it takes hours to upload. Is there a quick simple method of uploading images or increasing the upload speed of my internet connect which seems to be a fraction of the service providers quoted download speed.
