  1. Assistant/Alternate Captain

  2. It stands for alternate

  3. It means "attitude". The NHL designates guys who don't play fair with these letters so that the refs can spot them and penalize them. You'll see a lot of these attitude guys in the penalty box, just like the captains (which really means captain of penalty minutes).

  4. A on almost all sports Jersey's are for Assistant Caption. Caption's and assistants have to me recognized so that if there is a dispute with the ref, they know who they should be talking to, be it to warn the team to keep their sticks down, or to argue a penalty or a goal or what not. The ref's only have to address those with the C or the A on their Jersey, they don't have to talk to anyone else.

  5. It stands for alternate captain.  Usually one offensive and defensive player are the alternate captains.  They like the captains get information from the refs and relay it to the team.

  6. Alternate Captain

Teams may designate alternate captains, who are sometimes referred to erroneously as "assistant captains". Alternate captains wear the letter A on their jerseys in the same manner that team captains wear the C. In the NHL, teams may appoint two alternate captains if they have a captain, or they may appoint three alternate captains and no captain. In the CHL, teams are allowed to have a captain with up to three alternate captains. International rules stipulate that "each team shall appoint a Captain and no more than two Alternate Captains." When the captain is off the ice, any alternate captain on the ice is responsible for fulfilling the captain's official role as liaison to the referees.

Teams need not appoint the same players as alternate captains from game to game, though they generally do. NHL alternate captains perform many of the same leadership and team building roles as the captain.

  7. It stands for alternate captain, not assistant captain.

In todays game it really means nothing, except that they are the teams leaders on and off the ice. When the referee is explaining a call, he tell the captains of both teams then the captains will relay the information back to their respective coaches. If the captain is not available, then an alternate will take his place.

  8. It could mean Assistant, Assistant Captain, Alternate, or Alternate Captain. If the Captain is off the ice, then the A people take over as Captain until the real Captain is back on the ice.

  9. it means assistant or alternate captain; it means if the captain is not in the team lineup in a game, the alternate captain becomes the captain in that game

  10. Assistant or also known as Alternate captain.

There can be two on an NHL team + one captain.

  11. alternate captian

  12. its like assistant captain

  13. There are two "A"s in hockey.  Both represent an Assistant Captain.
