  3. It means "attitude". The NHL designates guys who don't play fair with these letters so that the refs can spot them and penalize them. You'll see a lot of these attitude guys in the penalty box, just like the captains (which really means captain of penalty minutes).

Caption's and assistants have to me recognized so that if there is a dispute with the ref, they know who they should be talking to, be it to warn the team to keep their sticks down, or to argue a penalty or a goal or what not.
