  1. If there was one in the past you might be able to make an argument for Pan Am or even TWA.

  2. there is none.  Deregulation made suro of that

  3. Our airlines are not Government owned.

The biggest are United and American.

Both airlines have not only domestic but

    international routes.

And Baron...El-Al, I hate to break the news to you, it's the national airline..of Israel. Or are you being a smart-aleck?

  4. No government owned airlines here.  American is just the

name of the airline.  FedEx (Federal Express) isn't owned

or run by the federal government either.

  5. no such thing in the US

  6. We are not a communist country.  Despite what the liberals in this country want to do with it.  The government has no business involved in free enterprise.

  7. El Al...............

  8. While you are right that United was originally Boeing Air Transport, both them and American airlines trace their beginnings to megers of much smaller airlines.

Neither of them would be considered the US's national carrier as the US Government does not own a particular airline. Although United and American are the two largest passenger airlines in the US with the most 'reach'.

While Air Canada initially started as Trans Canada Airlines which was funded by the Government, this is no longer the case. It was privatized in 1988 and is no longer owned by the Government. Both the US and Canada have a deregulated airline industry which allows airlines to pick and choose what routes they will fly domestically.

Internationally, different countries have different agreements with each other on how many airlines can fly between those two countries. There will be different methods within a particular country to determine which airlines will get new routes and gate slots at international airports. From my understanding, there isn't a particular priority when awarding these routes.
