It would be helpful if you told us which author, but essentially it is the style in which the author writes.  Dickens writes in a different style to Faulkner who writes in a different style to Joyce who writes in a different style to Emerson.  The way that they handle the words is important; do they use many words to describe something?  Do they use a few words to describe something?  Do they use flashbacks?  Do they tell a story within a story, or does the novel progress in a straight line?  What sort of dialogue do they use?  These are all examples of style.
