i am not really concerned with accuracy. with a home defense situation my shots would only be about 10-20 feet. If the the event should arise i want to know that i am shooting the most lethal round on the market. I am most interested in stopping power and REALIABILITY. FYI i live in texas so there is not really that "type of Law" bo be an issue. please be specific. thanks in advance...

  1. Hydroshocks.

  2. I personally have winchester 147 grain ranger T bonded ammo in my G19.

Corbon DPX is really good as well:

Here is a good resource for you:

  3. Well the 'best' home defense round is probably one of pre-fragmented Glasier type rounds because they don't go through dry wall endangering others in your home.  As far as a high quality all-around defensive round I can recommend the Federal Personal Defense 124 grain Hydra Shok round.  The Model 19 Glock is rated for +P (& even +P+) ammo so you could consider these also.  Just stay away from ball ammo, FMJ, or subsonic ammo for defensive purposes in the 9mm.  The best defensive rounds for the 9mm are in the 115 to 127 grain jacketed hollow point bullet weight from any of the major ammo makers.  Federal, Cor Bon, Gold Dot, Winchester, Remington all make quality defensive ammo for the 9mm.

The Glock Model 19 is an excellent choice.  Just match the right ammo to it.

  4. Obviously the 10mm is the most powerful; however the 45 and 10mm have a tendency to be hard to control on follow up shots. the 40 s&W and 9mm are more controllable when it comes to handling and successive shots. For 9mm use should be using 100gr corbon power balls and for 40SW a 155gr jacketed hollow point (any mfg) is just peachy.

  5. hollowpoints. my dad has them in his S&W 9mm. also i have looked at how bullets spread on point of impact. what hollow point does is spread open for maximum stopping power and slows down so it has a less chance of going thru the body and hitting someone else. here a pic of what it does when it is shot. note this is not the damage on a piece of meat or anythin. just what the bullet does.

  6. Hydroshocks are really good. Black talons are better if you can find them, but they don't make them anymore.

  7. Hollow points will get the job done, wether it is from a 45, 44, 40 or 9mm I use regular Winchester 145 grain hollow points from my 9mm.

  8. i would like to know too. when i turn 21. my first purchase is going to be a clock 19. gun is sick

  9. The one that hits your target.

Here's the scoop. Many criminals are willing to kill you for what you have, but when it comes to dying for what you have, they are usually a lot more hesitant. To put it simply, you start cranking rounds at them, they suddenly remember they have somewhere else they need to be. Just get a good round like Federal Hydro-Shock. Some like a Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) ball ammo becasue of the weight of the bullet. For a .45acp it is what I like. Spend the money a get a few boxes and shoot them to make sure your pistol feeds them without trouble. After that, practice as often as you can. Practice with whatever you can get you hands on. Shoot close range (3') and everything out to 50 yards. Practice precision shooting using steady stance and sighting. Practice quick shots with 2 hands and one hand. Practice bringing the weapon up from your side and snap shooting without aiming (close ranges). Practice everything. If you want, look around for some instructional videos for close combat and home defense techniques.

And when you get done, practice some more.

  10. Hornady TAP ammo is rated tops among 9mm rounds. Other good choices are federal hydra shoks, Remington golden sabres, Corbon,Winchester's new version of the black talon, etc.  winchester silvertips tend to hang up and mis feed on a firearm that does not have an extra slick polished feed ramp.

    Shoot safe

  11. Get FEDERALS ( 9bp ) " box stock num." load it's what a lot of cop's carry

  12. sorry kid but its more important to be accurate than worry what round.... glaser rounds are great...but get a few boxes and shoot them..many hollow points and safe rounds jam easy...

  13. hollowpoints

  14. The Corbon 115 grain  9mm + P (DPX).

  15. Well any bullet from any gun is deadly.  Even a 22.  At ten feet if you shoot there is a good chance you will neutralize the attacker (by killing them).

  16. Federal hydra-shock 135 grain JHP (jacketed hollow point)

Excellent combination of penetration and expansion

  17. Pistol rounds do not travel quickly enough to reliably expand, so always choose high-quality FMJ's to ensure proper feeding. Some people prefer heavy bullets, while others feel that penetration is the paramount factor. I've heard compelling arguments on both sides, so here's the stack in my Glock 23:

    1. Rubber bullet (for legal/moral purposes) 2. 180 gr FMJ 3. 155 gr gold-dot 4-15. repeat steps 2 and 3.

"Better to have a gun and not need it than to need a gun and not have it." Christian Slater, TRUE ROMANCE

  18. You are correct about reliability being the single most important factor.

You should "break-in" any auto before betting your life on it. This means a minimum of 300 rounds of ammo. This is easy since you'll expend at least that much in any good pistol class.

Try different brands of ammo in your gun. Many guns have preferences and you may find that one brand works much better or is more accurate than other brands. When you find a load that both you and the gun like, put at least 100 rounds of it through the gun. If you have ANY malfunctions you need to choose another load that will pass that test.

You do NOT want lethality, you want stopping power.

You have no legal authority to kill an intruder and neither do we (cops).

Depending on the situation, you MAY have the right to use deadly force to stop him and if he dies as a result of being stopped that is okay  but you cannot "finish him off" once he ceases to be a threat.

As others have said, stay away from hardball or roundnose ammo for anything but practice. It will overpenetrate the intended target and could easily harm an innocent person. Any good quality, brand name, hollow point ammo is good. I like Federal HydraShoks myself but other brands are also just as good.

It is common in court, either civil or criminal, to portray your use of "deadly hollow point bullets" as proof of malice on your part. They will say that it is proof that you were out for blood, that you intended to kill when it clearly wasn't neccessary.

Nothing shoots this down as quickly or as effectively as your testimony that you used the same gun and ammunition that is issued to the local police officers! If at all possible, use what they use!

  19. Hollow Point or Glaser Safety Slugs.
