Question:

What is the "bug population" in the Olympic Peninsula in Washington?

I want more then anything to move to the Olympic Peninsula, probably Forks or Port Angeles, and I was just wondering, with all that rain and plant life, what kind of bugs we're talking about. you know, I mean are there MASS amounts of bugs just EVERYWHERE, or is it pretty much just like everywhere else?

I've got a major bug phobia, all bugs, even butterflies, we're talking serious hyperventilation here, and I plan to move there regardless, I'm just wondering how prepared I need to make myself.

thanks for your help!!

  1. Compared to most other places there are very few bugs - it's too damp and cool for most insects.

  2. I live in Port Angeles...bugs really are not a problem. Theres spiders, but those are everywhere. We have alot of worms, but those are below the ground, or on our fishing hooks. I lived in Eastern Washington for a while, and THATS where there is a bug problem!

We don't have really have poisonous bugs. Just bees, moths, worms, dragonflies, butterflies, nothing scary.

  3. We hike the OP quite often (and have spent a lot of time in Port Angeles) and have never noticed an overabundance of bugs. I think Eastern Washington gets all the bugs.

There *are* bugs (your typical skeeters, gnats, etc.) .. but no swarms and such ... no different than anywhere else.

It's the slugs and sasquatches you have to watch out for.
