I drove the island in 2004 and missed the Cliffs of Moher and the Aran Islands. I was in country 9 days and am bringing my adult daughter this time. I am more interested in the culture and history than the pubs. I certainly won't miss the Trinity University Library this time even though driving in Dublin was the most confusing experience I ever had. What's up with no street signs at intersections. Anyway I welcome any and all suggestions of "must experience" to know the heartbeat of Ireland - the Republic and Northern Ireland. Thanks in advance to all who respond.

  1. If you want some really interesting history and off the beaten track of Ireland visit Charleville Castle in Tullmore County Offaly, an hour from Dublin by Train from Heuston Station.  The castle is a one mile walking distance from train station in Tullamore.  Ask for Dudley Stewart when you get there and take a tour and tell Dudley Celeste sent you.

  2. Don't miss the Cliffs of Moher this time - they are breathtakingly beautiful.  Visit the Dingle Peninsula and eat lunch or dinner at a restaurant where the fish is just caught and is the freshest you'll ever have.  You'll also must travel the Conor Pass (Google Conor Pass) also on the Dingle Peninsula, the scenery again is amazing.  Try to go to restaurants/pubs where the locals frequent and not tourist traps.  Consider spending a night in one of their hotel/castles.  Request brochures, etc from the Irish Tourist Board - they are a wealth of information.

  3. I live there you should see the book of kells and the skellegs rock and the new grange it is amazing. Connemara is the best place. You might think it is the most beautiful place in the world. Have fun in ireland. Go raibh mile maith agat. Nothern ireland is ok but galways the best.Slan!

  4. I think if your passing through Co. Tipperary you should stop in Cashel and Cahir. There are 11th Century Castles there which are fascinating to look at. You should Google "Rock of Cashel" and you will see what I mean! It would make ancient Greek architects drool! You should also try to get out to the Blasket Islands off the coast of Kerry. They consist of three Islands which were abandoned during the famine. You can still see the houses and the way of life as it was there. The islands had their last inhabitants during the 1960's or something like that, but you could spend a whole day walking around them and getting a feel for the place. Hope you enjoy your stay with us this year!

  5. You should try to see The Rock of Cashel in Co Tipparary

And also the hill of Tara where the High Kings of Ireland were crowned.Donegall is always nice it is in the north west and is a wild and beautyfull place.Kerry in the south has the same wild beauty as Donegall.

Enjoy your trip and (Níl aon tintéan mar do thintéan féin.

    An Old Irish Blessing

May the road rise up to meet you.

May the wind always be at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face,

and rains fall soft upon your fields.

    And until we meet again,

May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
