  1. reins?

  2. the reins?????

  3. It really depends on what aids the horse is trained in, ie. seat, hands, legs, verbal, bit pressure, etc.

-a driving horse will turn right/left in

        response to the verbal gee/haw

-some respond to "neck reining" laying

the rein on either side of the neck to go

        right/left

-some horses "plow rein" direct bit

        pressure

-some respond to leg pressure, contact

from the riders leg to an area on the

        horses side

-position and pressure of the seat

There are literally hundreds of "steering wheels" but they all start with the reins.

[As an example, 2 years ago we bought a Paso Fino mare that was used as a plow horse, she literally plowed agave fields.  We started pleasure riding on her and got her responding to the basic aids; reins, heels, legs and hands.  Now, the little mare is competing in mid-level Charias (Mexican dressage is the best way to desribe it.)  She is controlled completely with voice, seat and legs.]
