What is the rank of a chief engineer aboard a naval vessel?

Was wondering if chief engineers were naval officers or were they simply just what theyre job title says.

  1. It depends. On large ships like Nimitz-class carriers, the chief engineer can be a commander. On smaller ships, anything from an ensign, up. All department heads on ships are commissioned officers.

  2. Not sure about the Navy but in the merchant marines, hes is the highest ranking officer in the engine department and his title is Chief Engineer
