  1. To define the rarest, most valuable coin would be difficult. There are a number of coins that would be candidates, including the 1933 double eagle mentioned. The Brasher Doubloon, the 1913 Liberty nickel, the 1870-S Three dollar gold piece, the 1804 Silver Dollar, and others would be in the running.

The value of such a coin depends on a number of factors, not the least of which is how well the owner is promoting it. The country of origin is another factor, as well as the coin's pedigree (who owned it in the past... anyone famous?)

Depending on the collector, "value" may be a broader concept than mere monetary value. More on that here:

  2. That is actually two questions for the rarest coin may not be the most valuable. There are some ancient and medieval coins were there is only one know coin that has survived at least so far. If there is a small collector base for this coin then it will sell well below what it should be worth, which is priceless. The more collectors and of course the more famous a coin is the more it is worth. The most rare and/or expensive coin will change from time to time due to some coins have been off the market for years and some will never be back on it for they are now in museums. At this point there is only one 1933 $20 gold coin that is legal to own and it has the record high price of $7,590,020 that is what it sold for in July-02

  3. Many are rare and value is subjective, it depends on what someone might be wiling to pay for it. If a coin is never sold, how do you know what it is really worth?

  4. The 1933 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle (U.S. coin)
