  1. A "cow" is a female bovine that has had a calf.  When she is born, she is a heifer calf.  Therefore, the ratio is 0 : 0.

Generally, the ratio of heifer calves to bull calves is about 47 : 53, but some groups of cattle can be the other way around.

  2. Disregarding the quibble about using "cows" to mean "cattle," the ratio normally would be expected to be about 1:1 male:female.  Dairy farmers however would prefer almost all girls, because the boys don't give milk.  It's possible to obtain s*x-sorted s***n that will give over 85% female calves (dairy cows do generally conceive by artificial insemination.)

  3. Left on their own it would be a  1:1 ratio since the only s*x chromosomes are xx & xy

but there may be other artificial factors such as artificial insemination (sp?) or whatever else cow farmers do that skew the expected ratio

  4. morningfoxnorth has a valid point according to the question.. all cows born are female.. though the ratio is 1:0 not 0:0..

the ratio of bulls to cows born is close to 50/50 with cows being slightly more prominent..

i'm not sure of the exact number but MFN's answer seems accurate enough.. it's the same for almost all animals
