What is the reaction involved in turning copper(II) sulfate into a hydrate?

  1. You will most likely be mixing CuSO4 with a soluble hydroxide like Ca(OH)2 that forms a solid with copper.


  2. You just add water to it.  With copper(II) sulfate, just leaving it out in the air is enough - it will absorb water vapor from the atmosphere to form the blue copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate.

    Adding a hydroxide will make a precipitate of copper(II) hydroxide, which is obviously not a hydrate of copper(II) sulfate.
