What is the real deal with global warming?

did you know that the "carbon dioxide" levels in the atmosphere is only inceaseing by a 0.0001%!

from 0.003 to 0.0031%, that is nothing, surley not enough to warrent the new weather and warming of the earth!

the truth of it is that the goverment and media are scare mungering!, so that when the increase tax on oil and petrol and things like that they can atribute it to "global warming".

the real case is that the earth goes therough these stages, avery couple of million yeras, the temp increases the slopes down and cools and the increases again...... and so on and so fortyh, this is what is causeing global warming!

did you no thair is gloarming on mars aswell! how could we of caused that!

it is just one of the earth natural processes, just like the poles swithching every million years lol so north becomes south and visa versa!

i have had my say what do you think?

  1. I agree totally with what you say - there are parts of Scandinavia that are cooling rather than warming - and this is part of some much greater cycle.

I do, however, think that long term use of fossil fuels damages our environment - deforrestation, acid rain etc - and therefore reduction on the use and increased use of renewable energies is the way foreward!

  2. spot on. i see from the answers people are still using 'the ice is melting' rubbish. THE ICE ISN'T MELTING ANYMORE AND THE GLOBE ISN'T WARMING, ITS COOLING. The ice was melting due to cracks in the earths crust which were caused by earthquakes.

I have an idea that when it becomes too obvious to ignore that the globe is cooling rather than warming and the government can't continue with their farce without looking like complete and utter morons, they will tell us that they lied to us to raise taxes to help pay for preparing us for global cooling.

I honestly don't understand how people can think we asre still warming, it's total madness

  3. You can also look at it this way: Carbon dioxide IS the most important greenhouse gas on earth (water vapor excluded, but it doesn't stay for more than a few days in the atmosphere while CO2 stays for decades, almost centuries and hence accumulates in our atmosphere). Since pre-industrial levels the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has increased with more than 35%. Wouldn't that make a difference? (That is if you believe in the well established fact of the greenhouse effect on earth of course.)

Yes, I've heard claims about warming on Mars. I don't think it's established that this is a GLOBAL warming. If some people still can't accept that we have warming on earth despite all the data that supports it (I'm not talking about you since you do seem to accept that the earth is warming), then how can people be so sure about what's really going on and what the trend is on Mars?

Please read more about climate change and the greenhouse effect and how it works here: I've deliberately choosen the link to Shell Oil, since they can't be blamed for being biased on this issue.

    Edit to LadyDJ:

I live in Scandinavia and we've just had an extremely mild winter for the second year in a row. (Actually, we didn't even get "winter" where I live.)

  4. when global warming takes effect the first thing that will happen is, obviously, that the world will get alot hotter... given time, it will melt the polar ice caps, specifically the southern polar ice cap first which was estimated to melt in 2048 but with the rate it's going it's said to be melted by 2012... then the first thing to happen is the rising of the water level globally.. after that, underwater current worldwide will have glitches or even stop moving totally, because currents are made of warm water cooling down and cool water warming up and pushing each other in a cycle, and that would result in utter and total chaos because that whole world's climate and weather is dependent on under water current and if it stops we could have typhoons, hurricanes, draughts, floods, monsoons, tornados and etc in all the wrong places of the world.... that would leave the ecosystem all messed up cuz amimals and plants that have adapted to a certain climate won't be able to adapt fast enought so half the species will probably go extinct.... and all of this has already started to happen...

well.. u get my point, and tats just the tip of the iceberg... and the best thing is, if everyone in the world just did a little bit like switching off the air conditioning while leaving the room and stuff like tat, it'll make a world of a difference...

  5. Look around you and you can see the changes in weather as well as the ice pack decreasing which could spell doom for most people.

  6. The real truth is nobody really knows what to believe, because you can only believe what you're told, and we don't know the real agenda of those telling us. Elements of the story are sometimes a bit fishy. It's being used a bit too much like the overuse of PC and health & safety.

It seems to be like a spiritual thing you need faith.

The bottom line is I don't know.

  7. The issue is not whether one believes in global warming, but on how much of it is caused by human activity.

Plots of carbon dioxide increase vs average global temperature do illustrate a correlation, despite the overall amounts of CO2 being seemingly small (even so, I think the percentages you quoted are erroneous).  It is the size of the increase, not the total amount, that matters here, since even small amounts are proven to have a "greenhouse effect". Also it is clear there is ice retreat in the polar regions and mountain glaciers.  This is obvious even to the untrained eye, should you be lucky enough to fly over Greenland on a clear day, or have visited the Alps recently.  Assuming that the CO2 rise is due to human activity (although it occurs naturally through volcanic activity, for example), then clearly there is some impact.

However, global warming has occured on a scale vastly more significant in both the geological past.  The hottest it ever got, back in the Eocene some 30 - 40 million years ago, when the Thames valley was flooded by the sea such that tropical animal fossils can be found in the London Clay under the city and the coasts were lined with steamy mangrove swamps.  This global warming was due to immense volcanically activity, with huge amounts of CO2 venting from volcanoes as the Atlantic Ocean was opening.  This may have, in turn, triggered a runaway greenhouse effect by triggering the release of metrhane hydrates from under the sea bed.  Much more recently, a huge global warming event occured at the end of the ice age a mere 8000 or so years ago.

The temperature rise at the end of the ice age was some 8 degrees over the space of just tens of years. It is mind-boggling that so few people appreciate this.  It must have been catastrophic for ecosystems on a world-wide basis. furthermore it cannot have been caused by human activity.

Aside from volcanigenic causes, there are a number of natural planetary cycles (see: Milankovich Cycles) that are much more significant than the changes occuring due to anthropogenic causes today. They have always occured, and they always will, and there's nothing we can do to stop them. This is fact.

  8. Well,it is nice to see people begin to question this brain-washing attempt to corral the mindset of the industrialized nations.

As I've stated in the past:The Earth is dynamic,She never quite stays the same for eras as they come and go.

First it was CarbonMonoxide. So Detroit put Catylitic Converters on all gasoline fueled vehicles.(In the U.S.)Lead-free gasoline, mind you.

         Oh, but then........it was CFC's!

So we ditched CFC's and powered aerosol cans with a whole myriad of propellants!

         No,no not it.

Ah-h, It is the Air Conditioners' Freon.......Evil Freon!!

Poor Freon.......freon is a 'noble gas'. Freon IS INERT!!!

Grande Freon reacts with no other Elements or their compounds.......Something stinks of Underhanded POLITICS!!

        LIES!! Carbondioxide my ****!!

Green vegetation NEEDS CO2 in order to BREATHE,

thus releasing OXYGEN....witch WE need to breathe!

Plus CO2 molecules are HEAVIER than the gasses that comprise Earths' Atmosphere.....so CO2 collects at sea level and ground level....

    Ok,it goes like this...

The Earth has irregularities in her rotation.

The axis is NOT set to a strict azimuth...... The Earth wobbles.

This'wobble'takes approximately 26 to 28,000 years to complete a cycle. As this cycle is not perfect in the parameters of the 'halo effect' of the 'wobbles'extremes around the Poles, 'warming' and 'cooling' effects can go to the extreme. Still this is a regularity...yet a variable one....

        A Paradox if you will.

         Ice Age....Heat Age.....Ice Age....Heat Age...over & over..

We are living in an "In Betweener".

Earth is approaching(rather,IN) the last phase of the 'Heat Cycle'. The Earths' climate shall continue to fluctuate...

Ain't a bloody-d**n thing the Worlds' LYING politicians

    can do about it.

For reasons unshared with the general public, politicians

will continue to lie to us . Attempt to alter the Mind-Set of

the 'educated' masses, for ulterior political and industrial

    motivations.

         Do I support pollution?!! YeGads,NO!

I was born in Steeltown Upstate NY....'Cleaning-up' is the

EASY part . Yes , it MUST be done!

On the side,as a youth, our gang spent much-o time playin'

at the rail road yards and chemical dumps....we'd bring stuff from home and toss it in the 'poison ponds' n' watch it burn'n'

explode...cool...at the time..(no wonder I'm a crippled old guy now...well ,..ya dance...ya gotta pay th' band.....)

         It's been cleaned up since.....most o' it ennyways..... .

The truth is ...we, Earths' Inhabitants, are in for one

helluvalittletrip as The Galactic Powers of This Milky

Way slightly combine with The Powers of This Solar

    Systems' Gravitational Influences....

and take US into a similarly, somewhat virtual rattled-up world that ,yes, the 'cave-men' were last to endure...

Sooooooo-o...The Politicians gotta keep the majorities

mind on something........ as for me...

              Surfs'-up!!!!! Time to Boogey!!!.......i'm goin' ta git a beer......th' "End" ain't near...but 'screwed-up' is!

                                     backatcha,Sittingmoose,shaman.

  9. I can say that i am more interested in the global warming saga....... I am more understanding to the enviroment and that we are wrecking what used to be nature. We live in a world of waste and no consideration for mother earth.........

  10. why  are you taking the 0.0001% slightly, its a very big number (remember we are talking about a bowling ball) for the earth, thats probably equals thousands of cubic metres in the earth atmosphere

  11. the carbon dioxide levels were at the highest before the last ice age so this has got nothing to do with the alledged global warming

it is just a natural cycle repeated throughout the earths history
