  2. Science and philosophy both rely on reason.

Science is our tool to explain the physical world. Science can tell us where we came from and how we came to be. Science can not tell us what we should or should not do.

Philosophy is our tool to explain and study the issues of existence - truth, justice, logic, etc. Philosophy is often involved in the debate of morality and ethics, and can be used to help us decide what we should or should not do.

Philosophy can essentially be used to compliment science - philosophy can satisfy your spiritual aspect of life, while science can explain and satisfy natural aspects of life.

Historically, science and philosophy were both explained through religion. I for one, believe that science and philosophy can eventually replace organized religion. Whichever side you think is better is up to you.

  3. Science _is_ a philosophy.

Metaphysics: There is something out there (an objective reality exists, independent of any observer).

Epistemology 1: We are capable of experiencing and learning things about that external reality.

Epistemology 2: Humans are imperfect; therefore anything we _think_ we know about external reality might be wrong.

  4. They are both in some sense epistemologies. Science is about approaching knowledge through physical evidence, philosophy is about approaching knowledge through pure thought.

  5. There is no real link.

This is a question about history.  Today, scientists do not make any philosophical claims.  Philosophers sometimes use scientific observations to back up their ideas -- economics is a good example of this.

Consider the huge controversy that happened when Galileo said that the earth revolved around the sun.  That was a big deal, because the Catholic Church had been saying that the earth was the center of the universe -- and if they were wrong about the earth, were they wrong about God?  Today, science, religion and philosophy are all separate fields of study,  and they do not make claims into each other's territories.

  6. There isn't a link, they are different disciplines.  Start studying them both, and the differences become apparent.

  7. Common sense.
