I'm doing research this summer at a university, and as homework, my mentor asked me to find out what the name of a baby's first f***s was (meconium, got that) and what the real name for a newborn baby horse's foot is. I've searched and searched online, I asked some of his grad students, and nobody seems to know. Does anybody have a clue, or is my mentor just messing with my head?

"At birth, the hoof wall is covered and protected by soft horn (perionychium)"

  4. Maybe they meant the soft bony "fingers" that grow on a foal's hoof when it is in utero?  I'm afraid I don't know the scientific/medical term for those, sorry.

  5. flicka

  6. I think your mentor is messing with you, a hoof is a hoof no matter what age.
