What is the real name of Meat Loaf?

Back in the 80s I saw him on the Today Show. He said he had previously said his name was Marvin but that it is really Michael. He said he likes to mess with people and make up stuff. Now was he  messing with people when he said his name is Marvin or when he said it's Michael? I see both all over the place. I've seen something saying he changed his name to Michael when he was 7 years old; I've seen that he changed it in 2001. I saw him on another interview and when he asked if he minded the host asking his real name, he said yes. And that was that. I think it's a running game he plays with the media and his fans.
