  1. The Peace Corps Mission:

    1.  Helping the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women.

    2. Helping promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served.

    3. Helping promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.

The mission of Peace Corps has remained unchanged since its creation in 1961.

As a RPCV, I take offense to the previous answer which claims we help "primitive" cultures.  Right now Americans could learn a great deal about how to act civilized from some of these "primitive" cultures.

  2. It was and still is a gesture of good will to help primitive cultures with their infrastructure:digging wells, building safe structures and bridges, etc. Its' one of America's few well intentioned foreign interventions.
