I have a 1968 volkswagen beetle. There is a red push button between the light and wiper switch. It is not the hazards. I have looked in numerous books for some clue. Can anyone help?

  1. If it pulls in and out, it might be the choke. This helps the car start when it's cold.

    Otherwise, push it and find out! :D You know you want to.

  2. That is the warning light for dual circut brakes, according to the December 1967 (1968 Model Year) Beetle Owner's Manual. I got this information from The Samba, an excellent site loaded with information on all types of VWs. Here is a link to the '68 owners manual;

    http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manu...

    and on page 16 it explains the function of the push button indicator lamp, as follows, " The brakes should be checked before driving off. Your Volkswagen is equipped with a dual brake system. Both systems, front and rear, can function independently. An indicator lamp on the instrument panel controls the brake systems. Should the indicator lamp light up when applying the brakes, see your authorized VW dealer as soon as possible because one of the two brake systems may have failed. The brakes will still operate, however, a longer distance is required to bring the vehicle to a halt. Push indicator lamp after switching the ignition. If the lamp does not light up, the bulb should be replaced."

    So, check to see if the bulb is burned out. If it lights up after you switch the ignition on, you are good to go.
