As we all know, orgy (s*x group) was pretty well-known during ancient greece era. They conducted it,as a formal ritual and that was a very popular "event" throughout the society.Actually, ancient greece was the original creator and inventor of this sexual act.And "the state of greece" was the very first democracy nation ever existed on earth.

Anyway,i just watched a japanese classic in 60's called "The Pornographer",which is very interesting, especially at the scene when the lead actor (a p**n-maker) was discovered the relation between orgy and democracy idea among thousands of fornicators that performed "extreme" sexual acts in a dark room.He said, "Orgy is a way of freedom.Orgy is how to make democracy works".And also there was a denmark-produced movie called "The Idiots"(1997) which indirectly was trying to find a "cryptic connection" between democracy system and orgy.

So,what makes me wonder : Does orgy symbolyze anything related with democracy? What kind of democracy thing actually (beside "freedom")that represents in orgy? Were they just being cynical? I believe that was a methapor and i'm very curious to break the code!

  1. First of all you need to clear up the word "orgy" and what it meant in ancient Greece.

    [Quote]

orgies, (in ancient Greece) esoteric religious rituals, esp. in the worship of Demeter or Dionysus, characterized in later times by wild dancing, singing, and drinking.

    [Quote]

An orgy (όργιον) was a secret cultic congregation at nighttime in Ancient Greek religion, overseen by an orgiophant (a teacher or revealer of secret rites)

Greek όργιον is cognate with έργον "work, effect, [religious] service" (ultimately cognate to English work itself). The term was lent into English in the 16th century, via the Latinized orgia.

Since the 17th century, due to its connection with Dionysus and the Bacchanalia, the English term orgy could refer to "any licentious revelry", in particular group s*x or promiscuity, but the term can also denote other acts which may not include s*x. For example an "alcoholic orgy" is an event where people show no restraint in alcohol consumption. This is better known as binge drinking.

So, while there could be sexual activities during an orgy it was not necessary. The idea that orgy = s*x is a more modern idea.

You have a group of people worshiping gods and people that manages to please the gods get power from the masses that look at the good things that they've done. I'm thinking that you have the democracy right there. A group of people that's connected to the gods that's elected in a democratic way for their abilities. An orgy most commonly involves several persons so you it's more democratic than one person doing the worship and getting the power.
