Question:

What is the relation between UFC and WEC?

The last UFC pay per view showed commercials for the WEC bout Pulver vs Faber. I watched that fight on Vs. and they were advertising for UFC. I found this odd since you'd think that they'd be competitors. Is WEC a minor league for UFC? Are they just partners? Any answer will help. Thanks

  1. While they are both owned by Zuffa, and they are using them to cross advertise they are considered separate as far as the contracts go. The fighters have contracts through Zuffa but considered either WEC fighters or UFC fighters. Rarely changing over.

Also the WEC focuses on the Lighter weight classes such as:

    Bantamweight - 125 lbs. to 135 lbs.

Featherweight - over 135 lbs. to 145 lbs.

Lightweight - over 145 lbs. to 155 lbs.

Whereas the UFC tends to start at Lightweight and go all the way to heavyweight. With the Light Heavyweight division offering most of the big name stars.

Eventually Zuffa's idea is build them up to where they are even with each other and have title unifications. This is still years away though.

  2. They are owned by the same billionaires Zuffa Inc.

They have different presidents.  All agree that WEC doesn't have lower quality fighters.

  3. It is like what NFL was to the Euro NFL

Zuffa owns both, and is trying to get WEC more popular.

Then WEC and UFC will co-promote matches....

    Just wait.

  4. When 2 grown up leagues love each other very much Dana White buys them and they make a baby league.  Then Dana puts the baby league on VS and the daddy league Spike on the same night that Extreme XC shows clown-fights on CBS.  Eventually Dana starves the clown-fight league to death because nobody wants to advertise on clown-fight night, and Zuffa/Dana take over all televised fighting in the Western Hemisphere.  So Dana controls all fights that are on TV but still won't let Feydor fight  anyone in the UFC without an exclusive contract and all the fight fans in the world are sad.

    The end.

  5. yah man they are both owned by zuffa..
