  1. Your question is very general and could be answered in many ways. But here are a few comments: rivers cut v-shaped valleys. Glaciers cut u-shaped valleys.

    Generally topography influences the shape of the valley and the rate at which it forms (is it in the mountains with steep slopes or is it forming in a relatively flat region?) Rock types and climate affect the shape as well.

    Other geologic processes, such as faulting, can affect the shape or size of valleys. For example, extensional faulting (rifting) in eastern Africa has created the enormous African Rift Valleys.
