Question:

What is the relationship between a violin and guitar?

Meaning: what key should a violin play to accompany a guitar playing in a particular key? Are there many that will work or is it one? So, if I'm playing in the key of G in the guitar, to improvise a solo or play backup notes, what key should re violin be in? Does it even work this way?

Thanks for your insight...

  1. The main difference is that the strings on a violin are(starting from the highest):

    E---------------------------

    A---------------------------

    D---------------------------

    G---------------------------

In other words, the bottom four strings on a guitar backwards and an octave higher.

To play in the same key as guitar, say it is playing a constant G chord.

Play a basic major scale off of the lowest G.

If the root note of the scale if is a G, then you are playing with the guitar.

Also, you can play scales off the root note of C and D, because these are G's 3 and 5 on a major scale, and are commonly used as transition chords.

    Hope that helps a bit.

  2. Violin and Guitar do not need any special tuning to play together. Violin strings are tuned in reverse of the Guitar.

If you play in G, the violin will improvise in G as well. No difference except for the fingering.

  3. A violin is a guitar

  4. They are both C instruments, so you do not have to transpose.
