  1. History determines present culture in many ways.

    For example, because of the 'Wild West' frontier experience, the US is a very lawless country.  Because the first settlers came at a time when John Locke was very popular, the US is a liberal democracy.  

    For other countries: Because most settlers came to Australia when socialism was popular in England, they are very socialist and call each other 'mate.' (equivalent of the Russian, 'comrade.') Because of the Roman Empire and Renaissance, Italians are very proud of their country.

    In other words, history determines how you view what your country is like.
