  1. Population generally has to be with in the capacity of an environment. That is can the environment keep them a live without exhausting itself or destroying itself. So too much population will exhaust an environment but too little will not be able to propagate itself resulting in extinction. Subsistence patter refers to how a population fair at different population level and environmental factors. Generally it fluctuate, that is it booms and decline periodically.

  2. Carrying capacity is the "number of people that the available resources can support at a given level of food-getting techiniques." So, carrying capacity, by definition, is based on the subsistence pattern. The population seems to determine the subsistence method. If the population is smaller, then it is more mobile, and food-foraging is an effective subsistence method. This is so because if the population overwhelms the carrying capacity of the land, then they can simply move on to an area that has more available resources.

The subsistence pattern will also influence population size. There are less births, and thus a smaller population, in foraging societies because the mothers do not have enough body fat to sustain multiple births.

If the land has an abundance of resources, perhaps the population will begin to use it for farming. If successful, the population will grow and and move into agriculture. If the population grows, then the land must have an agreeable carrying capacity in order to sustain the population. They are all equally important and interconnected in terms of societal adaptation and survival.

  3. Subsistence pattern is how people live - what food they eat, where they find shelter, etc. The population is the # and makeup of the people in a specific area. The carrying capacity of the environment is the # of people that the area can support based on the subsistence pattern in existence.

  4. Subsistence pattern is how people obtain food from their environment.  Carrying capacity is a statistical projection of how many members of a given species a given environment can support ("carry"). This statistic is usually based on very gross estimates of biotic productivity.  Population.... well.... I assume you know what that is....  See the relationship?
